(KRON) -- Saturday, Dec. 27, marks the second day of Kwanzaa. For those who want to celebrate, there’s a free event in Hayward on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. at Hayward City Hall. Community members will honor African culture during the third annual Kwanzaa celebration. The event will include a fr ee lunch, dance, music, vendors, and a lifetime achievement award. It is also kid-friendly and open to everyone, rain or shine. Velda Goe, founder of the group Fayeth Gardens, says it’s important for the community to pay tribute to its African roots and continue traditions. “That’s because of the legacy of slavery,” Goe said. “We were separated from our culture, from our language, from the food that we eat. And, you know, that’s like a tree without roots. Marcus Garvey said that hundreds of years ago — a tree without roots will fall — and African Americans are not familiar with their own indigenous culture.” The event is free, but tickets are encouraged. Click here to sign up on Eventbrite until midnight Saturday. ...read more read less
