INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Spring-like warmth hangs around one more day with record highs a possibility on Sunday. A strong cold front will spark rain storms during the day before ushering in much colder air and blustery conditions by Monday morning.

DAY NIGHT: Mostly cloudy skies continue. Temperatures will rise from the upper 40s to the mid-50s as the night goes on. Some of us may be near 60 by sunrise. A couple of sprinkles or light showers are possible in addition to areas of fog.
SUNDAY: Mostly cloudy, breezy, mild, and humid for late December. Highs will be well into the 60s and there may be new record highs established. The old record high for Indianapolis is 65 set back in 1984.
There may be some morning showers around but higher odds of rain storms will exist later into the afternoon and evening as a cold front marches from west to east across the State of Indiana. Some storms could be extra gusty (50+ MPH) and there is a LEVEL 1 risk of of severe weather for most of the state. Any severe threat should end by mid evening.
While the chance of a spin-up tornado somewhere is very low, it’s never zero in a situation like this with lots of wind energy zipping through the atmosphere. One limiting factor in the overall severe risk is a lack of a super unstable air. That may end up being our saving grace. The amount of expected rain has diminished with each recent model run. The heaviest rain may now fall across Northern Indiana.
SUNDAY NIGHT: temperature quickly plummet after midnight, falling below freezing by the Monday AM commute. There is the potential for a quick freeze up of any free standing water left over from Sunday’s rain. Gusty winds and incoming drier air should help to dry out roads and mitigate a widespread icy road situation but stay alert. A few snow showers could also develop on the backside of the rain as it departs but any accumulation appears minor if it occurs.
MONDAY: Cold and blustery conditions continue with temperatures leveling off in the 20s. Wind chills should be in 10s or colder. A few passing snow showers of flurries could occur, especially north of Indy.
7-DAY FORECAST: Brisk breezes continue Tuesday but it’ll be a quiet day. Temperatures should push into the upper 30s New Year’s Eve but some snow could develop late and continue into New Year’s Day. Seasonably cold air looks to continue Friday and into next weekend.
