NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Some New Kent County drivers were given a special surprise for buckling up this holiday season. These gifts were handed out in memory of a local man who was killed in a crash while not wearing his seatbelt. The New Kent County Sheriff's Office has been conducting Oper ator's License Checkpoints throughout the county this holiday season. During this time, deputies have handed out gift cards for local businesses to drivers who were properly wearing their seatbelts -- "because doing the right thing deserves recognition," per the sheriff's office. These gift cards were purchased using donations from the family of 21-year-old Devin Samuels of Quinton, who tragically died after he was ejected from his car as a result of a crash in April 2021. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Their memorial campaign "Click It 4 Devin" promotes seatbelt awareness through a partnership with the New Kent County Sheriff's Office. ‘The most rewarding thing’: 8News meets Richmond’s real-life Santa Earlier this year, the Samuels family presented the sheriff's office with a check for over $12,000. These funds were raised through the 2025 Devin Samuels Memorial Truck and Car Show, which authorities called "a powerful tribute and a call for action." "The Samuels family, along with the New Kent Sheriff’s Office, wants to remind everyone that seat belts are required and they truly do save lives," authorities said. "As we celebrate Christmas and New Years, please remember to Buckle Up Drive Sober. Your safety — and the safety of those you love — is what matters most." ...read more read less
