(FOX40.COM) — California officials warn that a powerful storm slamming the state on Christmas Eve could be one of the state's strongest holiday storms in years. The California Office of Emergency Services is actively monitoring real-time data coming in from impacted areas as crews have been depl oyed across the state to prepare and respond wherever they are needed. "We're monitoring literally from the Oregon border all the way down to the Mexican border," CalOES Fire and Rescue Chief Brian Marshall said. Many communities are already dealing with damage and Gov. Gavin Newsom has proclaimed a state of emergency in several counties, including Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Shasta. In the San Fernando Valley, part of a tree fell onto a parked car in Studio City. No one was injured. In Placer County, rising water levels forced evacuations along parts of the South Yuba River. Higher elevation areas are seeing snowy conditions across parts of the Sierra. "These storms are atmospheric rivers," Marshall said. "Very strong, very powerful." The governor's office said that some of the areas the state has already deployed over 300 personnel and equipment to 14 counties include communities recovering from recent wildfires. "We know we have a lot burn scars, the potential for mud and debris flows, flooding," Marshall said. "So we have extra firefighters, fire engines, helicopters, swift water rescue teams on the ground ready to respond at a moment's notice." California residents can go to Ready.Ca.Gov to find and sign up for alerts from their local county and city governments. ...read more read less
