KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Broncos’ injuries pale in comparison to the ones suffered by Kansas City. Still, they have ruled some key players out for Thursday night’s game at Arrowhead Stadium. The Broncos (12-3) on Wednesday listed as out inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw (hamstring), center Luke Wattenberg (shoulder), wide receiver Pat Bryant (concussion) and tight end Nate Adkins (knee). In addition, the team announced that rookie linebacker Karene Reid, who has missed the past five games with a hamstring injury, will not be activated by Thursday’s 2 p.m. deadline. He was designated for return from injured reserve Dec. 17. The Chiefs (6-9) have put star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and backup Gardner Minshew on injured reserve with knee injuries, leaving third-stringer Chris Oladokun to start on Christmas night. On Wednesday, the Chiefs placed on injured reserve star wide receiver Rashee Rice (concussion) starting cornerbacks Trent McDuffie (knee) and Jaylen Warren (groin) and receiver Tyquan Thornton (concussion). Greenlaw was hurt in Sunday’s 34-20 loss to Jacksonville. He will be replaced in the lineup by Justin Strand, who returns after missing one game with an ankle injury. Wattenberg, hurt against the Jaguars, will be replaced by Alex Forsyth. For depth, the Broncos could elevate Calvin Throckmorton off the practice squad Thursday. Bryant and Adkins were also injured against the Jaguars. To replace Bryant, the Broncos could elevate Michael Bandy off the practice squad. Bandy, who scored his first career touchdown Dec. 14 against Green Bay, has one allowed elevation left this season. Players are permitted up to three each year by a single team. At tight end, the Broncos are thin. They have starter Evan Engram and top backup Adam Trautman, who doesn’t have an injury designation after missing a walkthrough Wednesday due to illness. The Broncos don’t have a third tight end available on the 53-man roster and Marcedes Lewis, who is on the practice squad, has used up his three elevations. Head coach Sean Payton declined to say Tuesday what Denver might do at the position. The Chiefs, a 13.5-point underdog, also on Wednesday ruled out tight Jake Briningstool (hamstring). ...read more read less
