For the first time in three days, all Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers in San Francisco have their power back on, ending one of the biggest blackouts in the city in decades. And although the utility announced bill credits for customers impacted by the outage, some local business owners are just starting to figure out just how much economic damage was done by the holiday weekend outage. “Honestly, I was panicking. And they sent another email, and it said that we’re going to have the power by 8:15,” Bader Shakarna, owner of Jay’s Grill, said. “So I kept him, I kept my employees, you I was like, we’re going to have power soon, because I stay open until midnight on weekends. And we did not have power.” Saturday night’s blackout in San Francisco caused for Shakarna’s refrigerators to stop working, causing tons of perishables to go bad. “Between the inventory and what I always make on Saturdays and stuff like that, I’m sure that cost me between $15,000 to $20,000,” he added. Across the street at Bar and Bean Fusion, the power was out Saturday night, all day Sunday and Monday. Owner Estuardo Castanon said he had to cancel all reservations over the weekend. “I feel bad about to cancel so many people that were trying to come in and dine in,” Castanon said. “I feel bad about all the employees as well, because they have to make their living, you know.” Both Shakarna and Castanon said PGE’s $2,500 credit for impacted business customers is a nice gesture, but they want to know more about the utility’s claims process.
