INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Tis the season for holiday baking contests, dessert exchanges, seasonal cocktails and potlucks. For the millions of Americans using weight loss medicine, it can be a very anxious time. Our WISH-TV Medical Expert, Dr. Janel Gordon, says it doesn’
t have to be.
Should individuals using these medications skip a dose?
I have some patients who will hold off starting their first dose until after the holidays or hesitate to advance to the next dose for fear of not enjoying themselves at gatherings. These are understandable concerns.
If they do initiate or continue treatment, how can they best prepare for holiday gatherings?
Focus on smaller, balanced meals. Heavier foods may lead to nausea and indigestion.
Be sure to have adequate protein and produce within a couple hours of waking. Aim for 20-40 grams.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. If you reach for a cocktail or even a mocktail, grab a glass of water as well. Individuals taking these medications are at increased risk of dehydration and acute kidney injury. Alcohol and sugary beverages can further increase those risks.
Listen to your body. At the first feeling of fullness, stop. Allow 20-30 minutes prior to continuing or going back for seconds. You could ask for dessert to go and enjoy later, savoring the memories of the event and the preparer.
Lastly, give yourself grace and remember that you’re on a journey to better health, not perfection.
