Kimberlee Singler, the Colorado Springs woman accused of drugging and killing two of her children nearly two years ago, has been extradited to Colorado from the United Kingdom, the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday during a news conference. Singler, 37, was arrested in t he U.K. on Dec. 30, 2023, just 11 days after Colorado Springs police responded to a burglary call at her home that investigators later determined was fake. The children were later identified as 9-year-old daughter, Elianna “Ellie” Wentz, and 7-year-old son, Aden Wentz.  Singler and her, at the time, 11-year-old daughter were treated for injuries. As the case unfolded, investigators started to uncover evidence that led them to believe the divorced mother was a suspect. Singler will appear in the 4th Judicial District Court for seven felony charges. This includes two counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder. Nearly two-year extradition process Fourth Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen said Tuesday was a “momentous” day, saying some international extradition cases can take over a decade to process. Singler’s case has been through many twists and turns since her arrest in the U.K. Her attorney in the U.K., Edward Fitzgerald, argued that extradition would violate Article 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights because first-degree murder carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole in Colorado. He said this would be “inhumane” because it does not offer any option for release even if Singler is rehabilitated. But a U.K. judge ruled in January that Singler could be extradited back to Colorado Springs. The ruling wouldn’t be enacted for nearly a year due to the overwhelmed nature of the judicial system in the U.K. Singler’s legal counsel also claimed that there were flaws in the criminal investigation, specifically that her daughter’s witness statement was non-voluntary. Allen declined to respond to the claims during the news conference, saying any questions that get “into the facts” of the case won’t be answered to ensure the integrity of the investigation. He did say there will be a “ton of issues” litigated in court, and that will likely be one of them. “In a general sense, CSPD is one of the preeminent law enforcement agencies in the United States. I’m very confident in their investigation. I know the investigators working on this case put in a ton of work to give us the best possible case,” he said. How the case started On Dec. 19, 2023, the Colorado Springs Police Department received reports of a burglary at a home on Palomino Ranch Point near Stetson Hills and Tutt boulevards. When they arrived, they found the bodies of two children, a police statement said.  Court documents obtained by Gazette news partner KOAA show that a court ruled Singler had to bring her children to her ex-husband for a holiday visit just days before the alleged attack. Singler and her ex-husband were in the midst of a contentious divorce and custody battle after their April 2018 split. Allen declined to answer how Singler’s now 13-year-old daughter is doing, but he said the injuries she sustained were “significant.” He also said the family was relieved to hear of her extradition and is ready to get the justice process started. Getting Singler back to the U.S. was described by Colorado Springs Police Chief Adrian Vasquez as a “great win” during the conference. “The efforts of getting Singler back were a signal that we are here for the victims in our community,” Vasquez said. “You can run when you commit a crime in our jurisdiction … (but) we will find you, and we will bring you back.” Singler will appear at the El Paso County Courthouse for her first appearance in the “coming days,” Allen said. Because she is facing first-degree murder charges, she will be held on a no-bond hold. In the next 30 days, she will have a preliminary hearing, where a judge will decide if there is enough evidence to send the case to a trial. Singler can waive the hearing if she wishes. ...read more read less
