A deadly fire at a New Jersey apartment complex for seniors left a woman who lived there dead and several police officers injured. The fire broke out at the 11-story high-rise building at 537 Avenue A in Bayonne around 7:30 a.m., according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office. Smoke could b e seen pouring out of the third floor of the building, officials said. As firefighters battled flames, they found a woman unconscious and unresponsive inside a bedroom. The woman, later identified by the prosecutor’s office as 82-year-old Irene Clark, was taken to Hudson Regional Hospital Bayonne. She was pronounced dead shortly after. Three other residents and eight police officers were also taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Four other people were treated at the scene. “It’s unbelievable. It was bad, it was a bad scene,” said Robert Luceno, who has lived on the fifth floor of the building for nearly a decade and knew the woman who died. “There was so much smoke, it was unbelievable.” After evacuating to a nearby community center, families were eventually allowed to return home to the building later on Tuesday. A cause for the deadly fire was not immediately clear, though the county prosecutor’s office did not suspect foul play.
