INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Colts lost to the 49ers, 48-27. The loss dropped the team’s record to 8-7 and marked their fifth straight loss.
Here are eight quotes that told the story of the game:
1. Shane Steichen on the defense’s performance
“Yeah, we’ve got to be better. That s
tarts with me. Got to be better. Bottom line, we can’t give up that many yards. They scored a lot of points, went up and down the field. We’ve got to get that cleaned up in a hurry. Our defense played great last week, and then this week – we’ve got to be better. It starts with me – bottom line.”
The 49ers scored 41 points on offense and had 440 total yards. They scored on seven of their nine drives.
2. Steichen on the mentality for the last two games
“Yeah, I told those guys in there, like, ‘Shoot, we signed up for 17 of these things, and we’ve got a division opponent, and we’re not out of this thing.’ Until they tell us we’re done, we’re fighting like crazy, and so we’re going to come back in this week, get ready to work and be ready to go for Jacksonville at home.”
The Colts need to win their last two games and need the Texans to lose their last two games to have a shot at the playoffs.
3. Philip Rivers on the mentality heading into the last two games
“We just got to find a way to dig deep and find a way to win a football game. We can’t worry about all the scenarios and all the things out there. I know they’re all out there. I know what they are. But we got to find a way to win a football game or none of the scenarios come into play.”
4. Zaire Franklin on the defense’s performance
“We got dominated today. It’s really nothing else to talk about. Credit to San Fran. I felt like they came in and they did what they wanted.”
5. Steichen on Rivers’ performance
“I thought he played really good. I think he just had the one play at the end. But I thought he was on fire all game. He managed the offense at the line of scrimmage, did some no huddle stuff with them, getting us down to the right plays, threw it to the right spots every time. Obviously, just had the one play there at the end. But overall, I thought he was really solid.”
Rivers was 23-for-35 passing for 277 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in his second game back with the team.
6. Rivers on his performance
“It felt good out there. I mean, I felt early we were seeing it good. We were going and I felt like we could have a good night offensively. And in a lot of ways, we did, but certainly left some things out there.”
7. Cam Bynum on the defense’s performance
“It just felt like we couldn’t get our rhythm started on defense. We have to take ownership as leaders that we didn’t really get any momentum for our team.”
8. Alec Pierce on building camaraderie with Rivers
“I think he’s the best leader I’ve ever seen, just in terms of commanding the room. Everyone’s going to respect him. He’s a Hall of Fame quarterback… I think having him around’s been great for our team.”
Pierce had four catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the loss to the 49ers.
Next up for the Colts is a matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
