PETERSBURG, Va. (WRIC) -- The City of Petersburg has officially announced its celebration of the second annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade. The announcement came Monday, Dec. 22, and the parade will take place on Monday, Jan. 19, at 9 a.m. at Pocahontas Island in Petersburg. According to a p ress release, the parade will start on Pocahontas Island, cross the MLK Bridge as it enters the City of Petersburg, and continue onto Washington Street, heading up to the Petersburg Public Library.  "This special day honors the life and legacy of Dr. King, whose leadership in the civil rights movement and dedication to achieving racial equality through nonviolent means have left an enduring impact," the City of Petersburg said. The holiday was first established a a federal holiday in 1983 and was first observed as a federal holiday on January 20, 1986. This years parade Marshall is Honorable Petersburg Judge Roger Gregory.
