Three more days of abnormally warm and breezy weather will plague Colorado’s high country right up to Christmas Day. However, a series of storms is forecast to bring double-digit snowfall totals to the state from Christmas Day through the first few days of 2026, with a short break just before N ew Year’s. Total snowfall over the time period could total between 18-30 inches. Recap: Light powder skiing and riding was had on Sunday in the northern mountains where 3-10 inches of snow fell, with calm conditions and mostly sunny skies. Power at Eldora was restored on Saturday, but only a few people heard the news, giving lucky skiers and riders their own Private Eldora, including a visit from Santa. Forecast: Monday through early Wednesday morning, no snow is forecast across all three mountain zones. Monday, however, is forecast to be a breezy day, but not as windy as last week’s wind storms where gusts reached 120+ mph in some alpine areas of Summit, Grand and Boulder counties. The other weather factor will be the temperatures, where highs will push into the 40s Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday across all three mountain zones. Finally on Wednesday morning, snow is forecast to develop in southwestern Colorado first, but only a quick shot of between 1-3 inches in the southern San Juan mountains, mostly around Purgatory, are possible by last chairs. Snow then is forecast to intensify late Wednesday night and overnight Thursday morning for the southern mountains, and could drop between another 4-8 inches by first chairs Thursday, Christmas Day morning. Some central mountain locations (Crested Butte, Aspen/Snowmass) could pick up between 1-3 inches as well with potentially no snow in the northern mountains. Coming in two waves, snow starts to fall Thursday throughout the day in the central and northern mountains too, but ramps up in intensity Friday, with the second wave producing snow late Friday evening through late Saturday night. The driver of this snow event is a large area of low pressure off the California coast will begin pushing a lot of moisture across the Great Basin on Thursday as it moves northeast into Montana. The storm will then push southeastward through the weekend, bringing snow to the northern and central mountains from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night. Long-term forecast: Monday through Wednesday, Dec. 31 general quietness and calm conditions are forecast across Colorado. As 2025 ends and 2026 begins, snow is forecast to develop in the northern mountains Thursday, Jan. 1, New Year’s Day and last until Saturday, Jan. 4 evening.
