The North Texas triathlete community is mourning after two members of a Frisco triathlete club were hit and killed while cycling early Saturday morning.
Just before 8:20 a.m. Saturday morning, Pilot Point police said they received calls that two men on bicycles were hit by a driver. It happened o
n FM 455 East, just east of Fritcher Road.
Lifesaving measures were attempted at the scene. The cyclists, identified as Andre Kocher and Scott Mages, were taken to hospitals where they died from their injuries.
Matthew Olivolo, an Ironman triathlete who lives in North Texas, said local men and women who take part in the multi-discipline sport are grieving.
“Hearing the news this morning was just devastating. This is tragic for all cyclists and ironman triathletes,” Olivolo said.
Kocher and Mages were on a group ride with the Frisco Triathlon Club when they were hit.
“There’s a lot of hours on the road on your bike,” said Olivolo. “And you become very close with your peers and develop a brother and a sisterhood that is just unbreakable.”
Olivolo chose to speak with NBC 5 at Endur3Bikes bike shop, where he said Frisco triathletes gather often. The meetups will now be without two adored athletes.
“I can only imagine what the families are going through with this tragic loss. And my prayers go out to them,” he said.
Police said the driver of the vehicle continued driving for a short distance but quickly returned and has been cooperative with the investigation.
The Frisco Triathlon Club will host a Santa Run on Christmas Eve to honor the Kocher and Mages.
