Al Downing pitched in 17 Major League seasons, including nine with the Yankees and seven with the Dodgers, more than a half-century ago. He is best remembered for giving up the home run that Hank Aaron hit on April 8, 1974, to break Babe Ruth’s historic record of 714 career homers. Bills quarterba ck Josh Allen does not want to be remembered in the same way. The Browns and Bills meet at 1 p.m. Dec. 21 at Huntington Bank Field. Myles Garrett is 1.5 sacks shy of establishing a new NFL record for sacks in a season. He is sitting on 21.5 with three games remaining. Garrett wants to set the record this week or Dec. 28 in the home game with the Steelers, because Michael Strahan set the record of 22.5 sacks in 16 games in 2001. “I do like highlight tapes, but I don’t like being a part of other people’s highlight tapes,” Allen told reporters covering the Bills, good-naturedly, when asked about the possibility of Garrett breaking the sack record at his expense. “He’s an absolutely tremendous football player. He’s one of the greatest of all time. He is a force to be reckoned with. “We’ve got to be ready for everything that they can throw at us. You have to be aware of where 95 is at all times.” Related Articles December mock drafts have Browns taking wide receiver with first pick Jeff Schudel’s Week 16 NFL picks against the spread Schwartz says Browns ‘won’t stand a chance’ vs. Bills if run defense fails again Browns’ Dawand Jones hoping to leave injury history behind in 2026 Outside pressure on Haslam to fire Stefanski as Browns’ coach getting louder | Jeff Schudel The Bills are 10-4. They will clinch a playoff spot if they beat the Browns, who are careening downhill on a three-game losing streak that has left them with a 3-11 record. When the season ends, their story will be about how many sacks Garrett will have and whether Shedeur Sanders can convince management that the Browns don’t have to spend their first draft pick on a quarterback. Garrett on Dec. 19 said it would “absolutely” be special if he could set the sack record against the NFL’s reigning MVP. Strahan recorded his record-setting sack against Packers quarterback Brett Favre, who in 2016 was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. “I mean, he’s a gunslinger himself, so he’s the kind of guy that, I guess you would say, Mike got those years ago,” Garrett said. “I think it’s a bit of a funny comparison because those guys have similar styles. Me and Mike have been compared before, but, yeah, it would mean a lot to go against him because he’s very special, and I have a lot of admiration for what he can do with a football.” The Browns and Bills have met twice since Allen was a rookie in 2018. Each team won once. Garrett hit Allen twice but did not sack him in 2019 when the Browns won, 13-6. He sacked Allen once in 2022 in a game the Browns lost, 31-23. The Browns’ injury list is long for the second straight week. Cornerback Denzel Ward (calf), right tackle Jack Conklin (concussion), tight end David Njoku and running back Dylan Sampson (hand) are out. Right guard Wyatt Teller (calf) and defensive lineman Sam Kamara (elbow) are questionable. Offensive tackle Chris Lundt (knee), defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (ankle) and kicker Matt Prater (quad) are out for the Bills.
