The Colorado Springs Police Department is crediting the prevention of a shooting to one of its K9 units after disarming a fugitive on Friday morning, according to a blotter entry by the department. Officers had observed Angel Pena Lopez, 36, in the 1500 block of South Nevada Avenue and requested assistance from additional units because he is known to flee law enforcement. Lopez had an active felony arrest warrant by the State of Colorado Parole Division and was being investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service Southern Colorado Violent Offenders Fugitive Task Force. When contacted, Lopez fled on foot and ignored commands that a K9 unit would be deployed, according to the entry. K9 Riggs was deployed as Lopez changed direction and ran toward Nevada Avenue, raising a handgun from his waistband. Riggs “engaged” the suspect on the left upper arm knocking him to the ground and dislodging the firearm, the entry stated. Officers then took control of Lopez and Riggs disengaged “within seconds,” police said. Lopez was left with injuries to his left triceps and head, which he hit falling to the ground, according to the entry. He was booked into jail after being treated at a local hospital.
