Richmond mayor under fire for antisemitic posts
Dec 19, 2025
(KRON) -- Calls for Richmond Mayor Eduardo Martinez to resign are mounting after he reshared social media posts falsely claiming last week’s antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach in Australia was an Israeli “false flag attack.”
The Bay Area chapter of the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC)
sent an open letter to the city Thursday, urging Martinez to step down.
“Such rhetoric is dangerously antisemitic, deeply offensive, and wholly unacceptable — particularly coming from a sitting mayor,” the JCRC said. “Words from public officials carry weight, and when those words echo antisemitic tropes, they place people at risk.”

The JCRC noted this is not the first time Martinez has faced accusations of antisemitism. Earlier this year, he spoke at a conference in Detroit where he reportedly compared himself to Hamas and wore a hat calling for the death of Israeli military members.
“Taken together, these actions reflect a consistent and deeply troubling disregard for public safety and the dignity of Jewish people,” the JCRC said. “They erode public trust and send a chilling message to Jewish residents that they are neither protected nor respected by their own mayor.”
On Friday, Richmond City Councilmember Jamelia Brown joined the JCRC in calling for Martinez to resign. Brown said she would not remain silent or “wait for things to blow over” while members of the community say they are hurting.
“As a City Council, we cannot vote the mayor out of office — he is an elected official,” Brown said. “The only paths forward are for him to voluntarily resign or for the public to pursue a recall or election process.”
Martinez has apologized for his post, but Brown argued that “an apology does not erase harm or give one the ability to conveniently move forward at their discretion.”
Brown also cited a recent uptick in gun violence in Richmond, saying the mayor has “remained largely silent.”
“I believe he has done enough for me to support his resignation,” Brown said.
KRON4 News has reached out to Mayor Martinez for a response. We have yet to hear back.
