One of the more unique traditions in South Dakota high school sports is Stanley County and Philip’s playing for the Traveling Trophy each year. The winner of the both girl’s and boy’s game would hold onto the plaque for the year, and have their winning score engraved in the meantime. The story goes back to when both schools were deciding who would be the rightful recipient of the Buffalo as their respective mascot. The two schools couldn’t decide, so they settled it on the gridiron. Fort Pierre would win that fateful football game 6-0, earning the rights to the Buffalo as their mascot. In game one of the doubleheader, the Philip Lady Scotties looked to retain the trophy and did so with a 60-15 dominant victory. The game was taken over by Drew Terkildsen who scored an astounding 37-points going nuclear from outside the arc. In the third quarter alone, Terkildsen went on a 6/8 stretch from three to lift the Lady Scotties to their second win of the season and improving them to 2-1. The Lady Buffaloes fall to 0-5. In game two, the Stanley County Boys also hoped to hold onto the trophy, and jumped out to a quick, double-digit lead. Eddie Duffy hit a few early threes to get the Buffaloes rolling, Paxton Deal facilitated and the two-man trap combo of Brendon Bothwell and Weston Prince was suffocating for the Scotties in the first half. The Buffaloes put an exclamation point on the first half with a Duffy half-court buzzer beater to take them into the break up 34-points. The Buffaloes would go onto win 74-33 and were led by Eddie Duffy who scored 20. The Buffaloes now take an undefeated, 3-0 record into the moratorium and will return to action on January 2nd. The Scotties fall to 0-3. ...read more read less
