A video posted on Reddit is sparking a lot of concern and speculation about a Fremont market. The Maiwand Market is a middle eastern store known for its fresh cuts all done in plain view. The market is a very popular place, especially during the holidays. However, a video posted on Reddit, labele d as “horrible handling of meat,” caught the attention of the store manager and some customers, and they were all quick to refute claims of anything being done improperly. The video shows meat piled in the back of a delivery truck, and workers hauling some of that meat into the store. The Maiwand manager first declined to comment, calling the video “stupid”. But then took NBC Bay Area into the meat storage locker to show conditions there and understand the process of handling halal meat. “I just want them to see that it’s FDA regulated, our meat,” said Quis, the manager. “When they get loaded over there there’s a FDA agent present, so if anything is off or the truck is not up to code, they will never let it load. And then ‘Mayar’s Meat, which is in Livingston, they have refrigerated trucks. All the truck are refrigerated.” NBC Bay Area contacted Mayar’s Halal Meats in Livingston. The operations manager said the trucks are refrigerated as required and are sanitized before being loaded with inspectors on hand. Then, the meat is stacked and transported on top of butcher paper for easier, safer transporting. Mayar’s says the piles of butcher paper can be seen in the video. The Maiwand store manager says he welcomes any scrutiny by the health department or anyone else. “We’ve been in business since 1991. This is not our first time or first day and whoever feels otherwise they can come and talk to me. I can show them the same thing I’m showing you right now. That all this is by codes and done properly by state and city codes,” Quis said. NBC Bay Area reached out to the Alameda County Health Department but hasn’t heard back.
