Driver accused of assault with deadly weapon after hitting Palo Alto police vehicle

(KRON) -- An East Palo Alto man is accused of assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly rammed a police patrol car while fleeing officers Monday night, according to the Palo Alto Police Department.
At around 11:15 p.m., police officers on patrol in the area of the 1700 block of Embarcadero Ro
ad saw a dark-colored SUV with expired registration exiting a driveway without its headlights on. While attempting a traffic stop on the vehicle, the driver drove at a high rate of speed north on West Bayshore Road. Police said the officers did not pursue the SUV.
Driver sought in deadly SF Mission District hit-and-run crash
The suspect driver and vehicle were found by an officer minutes later, Palo Alto PD said, waiting outside a gated entrance to an apartment complex on the 1700 block of Woodland Avenue in East Palo Alto. After the officer parked behind the SUV, the driver reversed into the patrol car before going forward, plowing through the entrance gate. The driver then drove through the apartment complex’s closed exit gate to escape law enforcement.
Palo Alto police investigators identified the driver as Jimmy Russian Cosey-Stevens, 63, of East Palo Alto.
Police found Cosey-Stevens at his residence and took him into custody after a brief foot pursuit, the department said. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail for assault with a deadly weapon, evading and failure to register as a sex registrant.
