New medicine to treat low libido in women under 65
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This week, the Food and Drug Administration approved Addyi, the first medication for low libido in women younger than 65 years of age. Low libido affects 1 in 8 postmenopausal women.
Addyi (Flibanserin) was first appro
ved 10 years ago for premenopausal women who report emotional stress due to persistent low sex drive or hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD).
The medication works by increasing dopamine and norepinephrine while decreasing serotonin. Prior to initiating treatment, it is important to assess underlying causes of low libido including mental health conditions such as depression, domestic issues and other medical conditions.
As no medication is without side effects, Addyi does have a boxed warning of risk of low blood pressure and fainting if combined with alcohol, especially for those with liver disease.
Users should wait at least 2 hours after consuming 1-2 drinks, prior to taking a dose of this medication. If 3 or more drinks are consumed, the medication should not be taken that night. Alcohol should not be consumed after taking a dose of Addyi nor should individuals drive less than 6 hours after taking it. Additional side effects include fatigue, nausea and dizziness.
Canada actually approved the use of Addyi in 2021 and now we have an FDA-approved treatment option for women navigating low libido after menopause. If you are interested in taking this medication, please speak with your trusted physician or healthcare provider today.
