Former Summit County Council Chair Malena Stevens announced Wednesday she is running for Summit County clerk in 2026. The same day, County Clerk Eve Furse said she does not plan to seek reelection next fall. In Stevens’ announcement, she emphasized her government experience, professionalism and commitment to administering elections and public records with integrity and transparency. “The Clerk’s Office is one of the most important operational roles in county government,” Stevens said in a statement. “It requires accuracy, transparency, and consistent and fair processes — especially in moments when public trust is tested. I’m running because I believe Summit County deserves a clerk who understands government from the inside and is prepared to lead on day one.” Stevens served four years on the Summit County Council and previously on the Snyderville Basin Planning Commission, where she was a decision-maker on some of the county’s most complex and highly scrutinized issues. Throughout her public service, she has worked closely with county staff, state agencies and legislators, navigating legal requirements, public process and intense public engagement. “Election integrity isn’t about politics — it’s about procedure,” Stevens said. “The clerk’s responsibility is to administer elections lawfully, securely, and transparently, and to communicate clearly with voters about how the process works. That kind of trust is built through competence and consistency.” Stevens said her focus as county clerk would be: Administering elections in strict compliance with state law. Safeguarding ballots, records, and election systems. Ensuring clear communication with voters and election workers. Continuously maintaining impartiality and professionalism. Providing transparency and open government.  Stevens emphasized that her leadership style is collaborative but grounded in accountability. “I believe in listening carefully and making informed decisions — even when they’re difficult,” she said. “Public service isn’t about headlines or ideology. It’s about doing the job well and respecting the institution you’ve been entrusted to steward.” Stevens lives in Pinebrook with her son and has spent over a decade working in local government and public service. She is a 14-year resident of Summit County. “I care deeply about this community,” she said. “I would be honored to continue serving Summit County as clerk.” The post Former Summit County Councilor Malena Stevens announces candidacy for clerk appeared first on Park Record. ...read more read less
