Nick Reiner appears in court, arraignment in parents’ murders postponed
Dec 17, 2025
Nick Reiner appeared in court for the first time Wednesday to face murder charges in the stabbing deaths of his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, but did not enter a plea.
Shackled and wearing a jail suicide prevention smock, Nick Reiner was behind a glass wall in a custody area. His on
ly words were, “Yes, your honor,” in confirming to the judge that he agreed to postpone his arraignment until Jan. 7.
Reiner’s attorney Alan Jackson, who requested the postponement, said it was “too early” for the 32-year-old to make a plea, TMZ reported. He and the prosecutors agreed on moving the arraignment, he added.
The filmmaking couple were found dead in their home Sunday afternoon after a massage therapist contacted their daughter Romy because the Reiners weren’t answering the door for their scheduled appointment.
Romy Reiner, 28, and the Reiners’ eldest son, 34-year-old Jake Reiner, thanked supporters and fellow mourners Wednesday in a statement.
“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day,” they told TMZ in a statement. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
They did not mention the alleged involvement of their middle brother, 32-year-old Nick, who was arrested late Sunday and charged Tuesday with two counts of first-degree murder. Two special circumstances — one for multiple murders, and a special allegation that he used a dangerous weapon, in this case a knife — could lengthen his sentence if he’s convicted. The death penalty is also a possibility, though prosecutors are still mulling that over. He is being held without bail.
Romy and Jake focused instead on their parents’ art, political activism, and the groundswell of support from movie fans, politicians and Hollywood A-listers alike.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life,” their statement continued. “We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave.”
Nick Reiner had initially been scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday but was sidelined by an undisclosed medical issue.
Outside the Los Angeles Superior Court house, Jackson said the case is “a devastating tragedy that has befallen the Reiner family” that would make for complex proceedings.
“And we ask that during this process you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward,” Jackson said, echoing sentiments in the siblings’ statement. “Not with a rush to judgment, not with jumping to conclusions.”
