Could a charter school replace Valley Forge Military Academy when it closes?
Dec 16, 2025
Radnor Township School Board members are now faced with deciding what to do after the Valley Forge Military Academy closes in May, 2026.
At a meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 16, the Valley Forge Public Service Academy gave a three hour presentation where they shared their proposal to turn the military
academy into a charter school that would focus on students interested in public service jobs.
“We want to provide students with a school that has a day that is structured, meaningful and connected to real world opportunities,” Valley Forge Public Service Charter School CEO Steve Flannel said.

At the school board meeting Tuesday, the charter school proposed curriculum that would combine academics with real-world and hands-on training and certifications setting students up to graduate with careers as first responders, law enforcement or firefighters.
The presenters said that they think it’s critical to encourage interest in public service careers and they want to build a school where students can explore those opportunities.
The goal is to open the new school by September of 2026 with 150 students grades six through eight.
Then, the school would add one grade level each year until it reaches its goal of full enrollment: 450 students in five years.
So far, the proposal has gotten mixed reviews with critics saying students who are 10 shouldn’t being on the same campus as college-aged students.
A second hearing on the matter is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2026.
