In October, the Citizens’ Independent Transportation Trust (CITT) elected Mary Street chair to move forward with the trust’s goals into 2026.  Ms. Street, who represents Miami-Dade County’s District 5 on the trust as a board member and was serving as first vice chair, is now carrying on the l egacy of past chairs and promoting a more connected, accessible, and sustainable transportation network.  A passionate advocate for smart city planning, including transit options, Ms. Street said she has lived car-free in cities around the world, including three years in Miami, and is committed to improving mobility, safety, options, and access for all residents of Miami-Dade. During the early part of her career, she spent two years as a judicial law clerk, first in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals and then in the District of Columbia Superior Court. Judicial law clerks function as the right hand to the judges they serve, and the immersive experience provided Ms. Street with a wealth of knowledge and skills that inform her practice today. Before her graduation from law school, she also worked as a student attorney at the Michigan Law School Human Trafficking Clinic. Following graduation she worked as a Bates Legal Fellow and legal consultant at the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s Anti-Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling Section, in Vienna, Austria.  Ms. Street is a partner at Wicker Smith in Coral Gables, where she focuses her practice on medical malpractice defense and appellate litigation. She and her husband, Matthew Street, have called Miami home since 2014. Her education and experience equip her to adeptly handle complex issues where medicine and law intersect. The CITT is the 15-member body created to oversee the implementation of the People’s Transportation Plan, which is funded by the half-penny sales surtax promoting the expansion of transit throughout Miami-Dade County that was approved by Miami-Dade County voters in November 2002.  The transportation trust has certain powers over the use and expenditure of proceeds of proposed charter county transit system surtax. The CITT also coordinates public outreach to inform the community regarding the transportation improvements that have been made. She said that her combined experience, vision, and dedication to public service will be instrumental as the trust works to improve and expand transit services across Miami-Dade County.  “From advancing the People’s Transportation Plan to delivering the transformative projects of the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Program, I will continue to serve the CITT at such a pivotal time for transportation in Miami-Dade County,” she added. “Together, we will continue expanding mobility options that meet the diverse needs of our community. Miami is getting there. I feel like Miami is a teenager city, meaning it’s still growing. It’s not just getting bigger, but it’s still trying to figure itself out and what it could offer to the world.” Ms. Street spoke with Miami Today reporter Abraham Galvan.
