LAPORTE COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO) — The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of incidents in which frozen objects were thrown from a moving vehicle, damaging cars and creating dangerous driving conditions. Authorities say the incidents occurred Saturday between 2:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., primarily along U.S. Highway 421. At least seven vehicles sustained damage, including broken headlights, dented hoods, damaged grilles, and internal vehicle components. Several drivers reported frozen water bottles being thrown directly at their vehicles. In at least one case, a two-liter bottle was also involved. Photos shared online show significant damage, with plastic fragments lodged inside headlights and front-end assemblies. One driver, Michael Gillis, told WSBT that his vehicle suffered extensive damage after an object struck it while he was driving. Repair estimates for his car range between $6,500 and $9,000, including damage to the hood, headlight, frame bar, and wiring harnesses. The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office said the acts are criminal and pose a serious risk to public safety. Deputies have increased patrols along U.S. 421 in an effort to identify the suspect vehicle and those responsible. Gillis is offering a $2,500 cash reward for information leading to an arrest. He said his goal is to identify the individual responsible and prevent further incidents. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.
