Authorities on Tuesday publicly identified a sheriff’s deputy who opened fire on a man, missing him, during a tense confrontation in Lakeside.
Deputy Chris Bearss fired on the 30-year-old man Dec. 10 after the man claimed to have a gun and then made a threatening move, authorities said.
The incide
nt began shortly before 10:30 a.m. last Wednesday, when the Lakeside Fire Department received a report of a man possibly experiencing a drug overdose on Briette Place, according to San Diego police. The agency is investigating the shooting under terms of a regional agreement to prevent conflicts of interest.
Deputies also responded to the call at firefighters’ request. Bearss arrived to find the man on an embankment in the neighborhood near Lake Jennings.
The man allegedly told the deputy he was armed with a gun, then “concealed both hands behind his rear waistband as (Bearss) provided instructions to him,” San Diego police Lt. Chris Tivanian said. The man then pulled his hands out, “extended his arms out with hands together and pointed toward the deputy,” police said.
Bearss fired a single round. Uninjured, the suspect ran off, but other deputies soon captured him, police said. No gun was found.
The man, who allegedly assaulted a medic while en route to the hospital, was booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of resisting arrest and battering an emergency worker.
Bearss has been with the Sheriff’s Office for about two years, Tivanian said.
