A San Jose family received a well-deserved honor after offering the world a lesson in kindness during a dangerous situation.
It’s a story the world first heard on NBC Bay Area following Black Friday’s shooting at Valley Fair mall.
As panicked shoppers ran in fear, some ran across the stree
t to the home of the Garcia family. Moments later, dozens of other scrambling shoppers followed. The family opened their door to everyone.
With some shoppers staying for hours, the Garcia family even ordered pizza to help feed them all.
The Garcia family was honored Tuesday at San Jose City Hall, with Mayor Matt Mahan presenting them with formal commendation for their heroic actions.
“Invited their fellow residents inside and reminded us what humanity looks like in the midst of chaos,” Mahan said. “Irene and Martin. Thank you. Thank you for opening your door. Thank you for making so many people feel calm and safe at such a terrible moment.”
San Jose police arrested a teen for the shooting. The Santa Clara County district attorney now is pushing to try the suspect as an adult.
