(KRON) --  The Dublin City Council is considering a resolution against reopening a women’s prison. Residents pushed for the vote after hearing that the former Federal Correctional Institution Dublin (FCI) was being considered as a site for an ICE detention center. Residents in Dublin plan on gat hering ahead of Tuesday night's city council meeting to show their support for a resolution that will keep FCI closed. FCI Dublin operated as a women’s prison for 50 years before closing in April 2024. This year, residents heard that the federal government could reopen the prison and use it as an ICE detention Center. Protesters arrested outside SF ICE headquarters "I realize that it’s federal property, but we also realize that grassroots organizations have a lot to do with how things are done in Washington D.C.," said Dublin resident Liz Schmitt. Schmitt and other Dublin residents joined forces with the California Collaborative for Immigrant Justice a few months ago to keep the prison closed. She’s been disgusted with videos of ICE arrests from across the country and doesn’t want her city to have any part. "Total lack of due process bothers me, let alone putting someone in a facility that’s filled with mold and asbestos," Schmitt said. On Nov. 18, the city council was approached by the grassroots effort, and a resolution was drafted to formally oppose the reopening or repurposing of FCI Dublin. It’s item 8.3 on the council’s Tuesday agenda, and public comment is expected to go long with concerned citizens voicing their opinions. Traffic collision stops BART service in East Bay: CHP "I look forward to many people going before the city council, thanking them for doing this, telling them they really appreciate this," Schmitt said. "Telling them they do not want that detention center in Dublin, and I expect the city council to pass the resolution saying they do not want a detention center in Dublin." The Dublin City Council meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Tuesday. ...read more read less
