Free Uber vouchers available for this weekend to prevent drunk driving
Dec 16, 2025
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Free Uber vouchers are being handed out in an attempt to reduce drunk driving this holiday season.
Responsibility.com and the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging, Travel Association (VRLTA) have partnered to offer Richmond residents an Uber code worth up to $15 to help keep drunk
drivers off the road. There will be a kickoff event at Tarrant's Café Downtown on Thursday, Dec. 18 at 3 p.m.
The weekend-long campaign will run from Dec. 19 to Dec. 20, between the hours of 4 p.m. and 3 a.m.
December is known as 'Impaired Driving Prevention Month,' and with the holiday season bringing people together in bars and restaurants, it can lead to drinking and driving.
In December 2023, 61 people in Virginia were killed in a traffic crash, with 22 of those involving a drunk driver, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Three out of four cases where a person was killed involved a driver with a BAC level of 0.15 or higher, which is around twice the legal limit.
“Studies show that Uber helps reduce drunk and impaired driving fatalities in our communities,” said LáVita Gardner, Public Policy Manager at Uber. “The holiday season can be a particularly dangerous time of year on our roads, which is why it’s important to act responsibly and make intentional, safety-first decisions such as choosing Uber instead of driving drunk or impaired. We are proud to partner with Responsibility.org and VRTLA to help Richmonders get a safe ride home for the holidays.”
To access the ride voucher, visit Responsibility.org to download the voucher to the wallet within the Uber app. When a ride is ordered within the Richmond city limits, there will be up to $15 towards their Uber trips.
