Jon and Carie Hallford enter guilty pleas in state funeral home cases
Dec 16, 2025
The owners of the Return to Nature Funeral Home both entered guilty pleas in their state cases on Tuesday, according to a news release by the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
The court will determine whether to accept the pleas of Jon and Carie Hallford on Monday.
If accepted, the H
allfords will each serve decades in prison after the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office found 189 improperly stored decomposing bodies in October 2023 at the funeral home’s Penrose facility, about 35 miles southwest of Colorado Springs.
The plea agreement would give Jon Hallford a 30- to 50-year prison sentence and Carie Hallford a 25- to 35-year sentence.
The trials for Jon and Carie Hallford are scheduled to begin in February and October, respectively.
Carie Hallford was scheduled to be in a Denver courtroom earlier this month for her federal sentencing after she pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, but the hearing was pushed to March.
Jon Hallford was already sentenced in June to 20 years in federal prison for the same charge, but has since appealed the ruling.
The couple initially pleaded guilty in their state case, but an El Paso County judge threw out the plea agreements after hearing argument from victims in the case.
Carie filed for divorce from Jon in August.
