GREENFIELD, Ind. (WISH) — A Greenfield man is behind bars after police say his infant son was found wearing nothing but a diaper outside in below-freezing temperatures. The Greenfield Police Department arrested Logan Nickolas, 20, Monday afternoon. According to a probable cause affidav it, police were originally called to the Prairie Meadows Apartment Complex off of U.S. 40 just after 3 p.m. Monday when a 911 caller reported seeing a crying infant outside in the cold wearing only a diaper. Upon arrival, officers found the child, noting they were “cold and with red skin.” One officer held the child in their coat before putting them in their patrol car to warm up. The temperature in Greenfield at this time was around 13 degrees, police say. Medics rushed the child to the hospital, finding that the “child’s core temperature was approximately 93 degrees” and had “severe hypothermia with frost bitten extremities of the fingers and toes.” While searching the apartment complex, investigators tracked the child’s footprints through the, following them 750 feet to the apartment they believe he came from. The affidavit says officers announced themselves several times before entering the apartment. Police noted a baby gate at the top of the stairs was unlatched and partly opened. There, they found Nickolas lying on the couch like he had been sleeping. Greenfield police said the apartment smelled like both raw and burnt marijuana. When a second child was found sleeping in a bedroom, police asked Nickolas if there were supposed to be two children the home. Nickolas went to check all the rooms, including a locked bathroom where police later found a cut straw on a tray. Nickolas, expressing confusion about where his son was, was then searched and detained for questioning. After speaking with the child’s mother and other family members, detectives arrested Nickolas on a preliminary charge of neglect of a dependent causing bodily injury. He was booked into the Hancock County jail awaiting his Tuesday afternoon hearing. A jury trial was tentatively set for June 16.
