Fire at Pa. apartment forces 400 residents to evacuate, officials say

Hundreds of residents were forced to evacuate from their homes while crews battled a fire at an apartment complex in Lehigh County over the weekend, according to the Whitehall Township Fire Department.
The fire broke out just before 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13 with firefighters being called t
o the Fairmount Place Apartments at 1 Maryland Circle in Whitehall Township, officials said.
Fire and police officials were on scene and helped nearly 400 residents evacuate from the building as the blaze was upgraded to a fourth alarm.
It took firefighters one hour to place the fire under control but crews stayed at the apartment complex to check for hot spots for several hours, the fire chief explained.
One resident was checked by medical personnel before being taken to a nearby hospital, officials said.
Two firefighters suffered minor injuries but were taken to the hospital, according to officials.
The American Red Cross was there to help the evacuated residents and a bus provided shelter before bringing the evacuees to Whitehall High School.
Overall, the fire chief reported that 32 apartment units were damaged by the fire and will need to be fixed up before the residents can move back into their homes.
Meanwhile, four units will need to be completely restored after the fire, the fire chief said.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
