INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indianapolis Jewish community gathered Sunday to celebrate the start of Hanukkah and to mourn following a mass shooting in Australia at a similar celebration.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis hosted the first of eight menorah lightings to celebrate Hanukkah. During Sunday’s ceremony, those in attendance also took time to pray for the victims of the attack.
CEO Mark Swatez says that the holiday is usually a happy celebration, representing triumph in the Jewish community following dark times.
“It’s a dark period for the Jewish community,” Swatez said. “To experience this and to know that tonight, we’re lighting the candles that we need to celebrate our joy, celebrate that we’re here together, even in this pain that we’re feeling.”
The federation posted a statement to social media, condemning the violence and expressing sympathy for the victims.
“This deliberate act of hatred targeted the Jewish community as they gathered to celebrate our sacred traditions,” the federation said. “It must be called out, and addressed, clearly and unequivocally as antisemitism and as an act of terrorism against our community.”
Swatez says he was shocked to hear the news of the violence in Sydney on Sunday. He issued a call for unity, especially during the holiday.
“When something happens anywhere in the world to the Jewish community. We all take it very, very personally,” Swatez said. “For this to happen on Hanukkah … really drives home the meaning of Hanukkah.”
In a statement, IMPD also condemned the violence, adding that the department is increasing patrols around area synagogues and Jewish community centers.
“In moments like these, we are reminded that the strength of our community is found in how we treat one another.” IMPD said. “Especially during this season, we must choose kindness, compassion, and love over hate.”
The Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis will continue to hold menorah lightings for each night of Hanukkah through Sunday.
