CT Democrats denounce Trump’s reaction to Reiner murders
Dec 15, 2025
Members of Connecticut’s congressional delegation found themselves in the odd position of siding with elements of the MAGA movement Monday, decrying President Donald J. Trump’s shocking suggestion that the killings of Rob and Michele Reiner were a consequence of the director’s opposition to T
rump.
The couple’s long-troubled son has been arrested in the deaths, but Trump wrote on Truth Social that Rob Reiner’s death was “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
The post prompted a flurry of critical replies, many from his self-described supporters and others from Democrats, including U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy and U.S. Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut.
“He’s just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him,” Murphy wrote. “So sick.”

Himes confined himself to reposting U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, the one-time MAGA Republican, noting that re-tweet was “first time ever.”
“This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” she wrote. “Many families deal with a family member with drug addiction and mental health issues. It’s incredibly difficult and should be met with empathy especially when it ends in murder.”
More noteworthy were the string of replies from Trump’s supporters. Mixed in with 29,000 “likes” were numerous replies rebuking him.
“Sir, Mr. President…I love you. I support you 100%. I DO NOT SUPPORT THIS POST! Highly inappropriate, and it puts us in their box. Tacky and tasteless.”
“Terrible response to this tragedy. Unbecoming of the Office of the President. I voted for you three times but this is beyond the pale.”
“As a MAGA I have tried my best to support every step of the way but not this time. EVERY human, I reapeat EVERY human deserves respect during something like this. I am ashamed that you posted that. You must humble yourself and ask for forgiveness in what was a very HUGE lapse in judgement.”
“ooh, sir, please take this down.”
Others noted that Reiner had reacted with empathy at the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the conservative commentator.
Trump did not delete the post, nor did he express regret when asked about it later Monday in the Oval Office
“I wasn’t a fan of his at all. He was a deranged person as far as Trump is concerned,” Trump said. “I thought he was very bad for our country.”
