Dec 15, 2025
Lewis-Palmer District 38 announced on Monday afternoon that all of its schools will be closed on Tuesday “out of an abundance of caution.”
In a statement sent out to district families and staff, D-38 communications director Amy Matisek said that law enforcement informed administration of a po
tential risk involving Monument-area schools.
“We understand this is disruptive for family schedules and will impact finals that were scheduled for Tuesday,” the statement read.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said it received information about a threat involving district-area schools, although a specific school was not identified. The Sheriff’s Office is the lead agency in an ongoing investigation and is currently reviewing all information received.
“As we’ve always said, staff and student safety are our absolute top priority and tomorrow is a great example (of that),” D-38 Board of Education President Ron Schwarz said at the beginning of the board’s regular meeting Monday night. “We want to thank our families and staff and students and community for their trust and their partnership as we take this action.”
Students at Lewis Palmer High School and Palmer Ridge High School will have adjusted exam schedules on Wednesday and Thursday this week. District extracurricular activities and before and after-school programming will not be open. Staff will be working remotely on Tuesday.
The Sheriff’s Office is working with D-38’s school security team, school resource officers, and the Colorado Springs and Monument police departments.
In its own statement, Saint Peter Catholic Church announced it will also close its school, parish offices and ministry center on Tuesday in response to the threat. Masses will be celebrated as scheduled at 8:15 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., and reconciliation will be available at 4:30 p.m.
Community members are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement, school administrators, or through Safe2Tell at safe2tell.org or 877-542-7233.
