Family and friends of the two students who were killed in the mass shooting at Brown University on Saturday have released the names of their lost loved ones.
Ella Cook, a 19-year-old sophomore from Birmingham, Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, a freshman who graduated in May from Midlothian Hig
h School in Virginia, were identified as the victims killed in the attack, according to multiple reports.
The manhunt to find the shooter continued on Monday, after law enforcement authorities released the initial person of interest, citing a lack of evidence. Hundreds of people gathered in Providence, Rhode Island, for a vigil to honor the two students on Sunday evening.
Cook served as the vice president of the university’s College Republicans chapter and has been honored by the student organization, her hometown church, and her loved ones in the wake of the shooting.
“Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she served her chapter and fellow classmates. Our prayers are with her family, our Brown CR’s, and the entirety of the campus as they heal from this tragedy,” Martin Bertao, president of the College Republicans of America, said in a statement.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reposted Bertao’s statement and wrote, “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, especially her parents. God please bless them.”
Cook’s hometown congregation, the Cathedral Church of the Advent, honored her during its worship service on Sunday.
“She was an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light, not only here, growing up here at the advent and the myriad ways in which she served faithfully and the ways in which she encouraged and lifted up those around her, but at Brown University she was an incredible light in that particular place as well,” the Rev. Craig Smalley said of Cook.
U.S. Ambassador to Uzbekistan Jonathan Henick issued a statement on Umurzokov’s death on Monday morning. Umurzokov was from Uzbekistan, according to NBC News.
“I am deeply saddened by reports of the tragic death of Brown University student Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov on December 13,” Henick said. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Umurzokov’s family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”
Umurzokov began studying at Brown University after graduating from Midlothian High School outside of Richmond, Virginia, according to the city’s local CBS outlet. A GoFundMe page was created in his memory to help his family with expenses.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people. He continues to be my family’s biggest role model in all aspects. He always lent a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation, and was the most kind-hearted person our family knew,” the GoFundMe page says.
Brown University President Christina Paxson confirmed on Sunday that it was her understanding that the shooting occurred during a final exam study session for a principles of economics class.
