6000 block of Drexel Avenue and was charged with murder, South Holland village officials said. Demon Smith, 20, and a 16-year-old boy were also charged with murder. The trio are all from Phoenix, a village near South Holland."I am more than beyond relieved to see a happy conclusion, to have three offenders who are successfully charged and held accountable for this heinous act of mistaken identity to take a young man's life," South Holland Police Chief Shawn Staples said at a press conference in South Holland Monday morning. Davell was visiting his girlfriend when he was mistaken for someone he "closely resembled" who lived on the same block as the target of the suspects, authorities said. Police didn’t release additional details about the attack, citing an open investigation, but say "thousands of man-hours were invested" into the case. "We have not rested until we could identify and arrest those we believe were responsible for the senseless and criminal action," South Holland Mayor Don De Graff said. Davell was described as an "outstanding young man" who was an honor student and played basketball at Thornton High School, where he averaged three points a game as a guard his sophomore year, according to MaxPreps. "Davell Holden was a great young man," Staples said. "He was a resident of our great community. When this crime took place, it hit home forever, not just for our residents but for our police department." Angela Birts, Davell's mother, expressed gratitude to the several police agencies and community members that came together to offer her support after her son's death. "I still believe in our faith and family and future in our community," Birts said.

An obituary written for Davell showcased him as someone who was known for more than his honor roll status and his "deep love" for basketball. "His positive influence and compassionate spirit touched the lives of many, and his memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him," the obituary stated."Davell leaves behind a community that admired him and a family that will forever hold him in their hearts."
