Television news coverage showed a large police presence at the home, which is owned by Reiner, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed. LAPD said the victims were found in the home after an apparent homicide.
LAPD’s Robbery-Homicide Division was investigating at the home in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood on the city’s west side that’s home to many celebrities.
While police sources who were not identified provided details to some media outlets, LAPD on the record wasn’t confirming certain details.
Police hadn’t detained or interviewed any suspects as of about 9 p.m. Sunday, according to LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton. Investigators canvassed the neighborhood but were waiting for a search warrant to enter Reiner’s home. Hamilton said the investigation was expected to continue through the night and into Monday morning, involving the Robbery-Homicide Division, forensic science and technical investigators. Once police get a search warrant, Hamilton said they’ll search the inside and outside of the home as well as the neighborhood, determine if a crime occurred and, if needed, work to identify any suspects.
Hamilton declined to specify Reiner ‘s and his wife’s injuries.
Reiner, known for acting in “All in the Family” from 1971 to 1979, playing Meathead alongside Carol O’Connor’s Archie Bunker, later scored hits as a filmmaker with movies such as “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand By Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally” and “Misery.” He also directed the military legal thriller “A Few Good Men” in 1992. His other explorations of powerful institutions included “Ghosts of Mississippi,” “Shock and Awe” and “LBJ.”
In 2023, his “Who Killed JFK” podcast — in collaboration with journalist Soledad O’Brien — was released. The production offered a theory that a conspiracy was behind the assassination in 1963 of President John F. Kennedy, differing from the Warren Commission, which solely blamed Lee Harvey Oswald. The podcast presented a perspective on how JFK’s death continues to affect America.
The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob Reiner has been married to photographer Michele since 1989. The two met while he was directing “When Harry Met Sally” and have three children together.
Reiner was previously married to actor-director Penny Marshall from 1971 to 1981. He adopted her daughter, Tracy Reiner. Carl Reiner died in 2020 at age 98 and Marshall died in 2018.
Former President Barack Obama commented on X that he and former First Lady Michelle Obama were heartbroken. “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action,” Barack Obama said.
Gov. Gavin Newsom on social media said of Rob Reiner: “His boundless empathy made his stories timeless, teaching generations how to see goodness and righteousness in others — and encouraging us to dream bigger. That empathy extended well beyond his films. Rob was a passionate advocate for children and for civil rights — from taking on Big Tobacco, fighting for marriage equality, to serving as a powerful voice in early education. He made California a better place through his good works.”
Mayor Karen Bass on social media called Reiner “An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.”
“Among his numerous contributions, Rob helped create First 5 California, a landmark initiative funded by a tobacco tax to support early childhood development programs. He and Michele fought for early childhood development and marriage equality, working to overturn Proposition 8. They were true champions for LGBTQ+ rights,” Bass said.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on social media: “Rob cared deeply about people and demonstrated that in his civic activities — whether by supporting the First 5 initiative or fighting against Prop 8 in California. Civically, he was a champion for the First Amendment and the creative rights of artists. And professionally, he was an iconic figure in film who made us laugh, cry and think with the movies he created.”
The family of the late Norman Lear, producer of “All in the Family’ and ‘”The Jeffersons,” commented “Norman would have wanted to remind us that Rob and Michele spent every breath trying to make this country a better place, and they pursued that through their art, their activism, their philanthropy, and their love for family and friends,” Variety reported.
Last year, Reiner and his wife hosted a fundraiser at his residence attended by then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
