Actor-director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were reported to have been found dead with knife wounds in their Los Angeles mansion on Sunday afternoon.
Multiple news outlets reported that two people had been found dead in Reiner’s home when the Los Angeles Fire Department was summ
oned just after 3:30 p.m. to provide medical aid. Late Sunday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass confirmed the pair were Reiner, 78, and 68-year-old Michele.
“This is a devastating loss for our city and our country,” Bass said in a statement. “Rob Reiner’s contributions reverberate throughout American culture and society, and he has improved countless lives through his creative work and advocacy fighting for social and economic justice. An acclaimed actor, director, producer, writer, and engaged political activist, he always used his gifts in service of others.”
She added, “Personally, I am heartbroken by the tragic loss of Rob and his wife Michele.”
Law enforcement sources told The Associated Press that investigators were questioning a family member.
Los Angeles Police Department sources initially told TMZ, the first to report the deaths, that both had suffered lacerations consistent with knife wounds and that the department’s Robbery Homicide Division was investigating.
Senior law enforcement sources also told ABC News the victims had been stabbed to death.

Rob Reiner, son of the late writer-director-comedian Carl Reiner, landed on the show-biz map as the “Meathead” son-in-law of Carroll O’Connor’s Archie Bunker on the edgy-for-its-time 1970s sitcom “All in the Family.”
The younger Reiner went on to direct a host of popular and classic movies such as “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” and “A Few Good Men,” to name just a few. He also directed the 1984 mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” and had just released its sequel, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues,” on Sept. 12.
