San Francisco, Calif. (KRON) – Supporters of a Bay Area animal rights activist marched through San Francisco's Mission District Saturday to demand her release from jail.
Zoe Rosenberg started her 90-day sentence at the Sonoma County Jail on Wednesday. The 23-year-old was convicted for stealing
four chickens from a Perdue Farms-owned Petaluma Poultry slaughterhouse in 2023.

Rosenberg was found guilty of felony conspiracy and three misdemeanors in connection to what the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office called a "coordinated effort" at the poultry plant.
Fellow animal activist Cassie King with the Berkeley-based group Direct Action Everywhere said Rosenberg has a history of standing up for animals, and she does not regret her actions.
"My friend Zoe Rosenberg is in jail right now. In solitary confinement, at risk to her health because of her diabetes and all for what crime? For rescuing animals suffering at a Petaluma poultry slaughterhouse," King said. "People are really outraged that she's the one being prosecuted and imprisoned, while the company that is abusing these animals doesn't even face a fine."
Rosenberg testified that she disguised herself as a Petaluma Poultry worker using a fake badge and earpiece to take the birds and then posted a video of her actions on social media.
She argues she didn't break any laws because she was rescuing the birds from a cruel situation.
Petaluma Poultry is a subsidiary of Perdue Farms, one of the United States' largest poultry providers for major grocery chains.
The company sent KRON4 News a statement saying, "This case is a reminder that illegal actions have consequences. Ms. Rosenberg broke the law, and her conviction on all counts is strong evidence of this. Strong personal beliefs do not excuse anyone from following the law of respecting the legal process."
Rosenberg's supporters, however, argue that she needs to be freed.
"These four chickens, they're still thriving two and half years after she rescued them. They were going to be killed at just six weeks old at the slaughterhouse," King said. "We're asking everyone to sign the petition at freezoe.org. We're asking Governor Newsom to pardon Zoe and get her out of jail."
