Bundle up and drive cautiously
Dec 14, 2025
City crews worked all day Saturday and through the night to mitigate the effects of the ongoing winter weather on our roadways. The melting agents they use to treat the roads are less effective at the extremely low temperatures we are currently experiencing. Drivers should expect slick areas, espec
ially on bridges and overpasses. Allow extra travel time and use extreme caution.
Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., the Lexington Police Department responded to 32 traffic incidents – one injury collisions, 17 non-injury collisions, seven calls for motorist assists and seven roadway hazards.
It is important to protect yourself from the extreme cold. Limit your time outdoors. If you go out, dress in layers and don’t leave any skin exposed. Hats, warm socks, a scarf and mittens are all important articles of clothing.
The Office of Homelessness Prevention Intervention Emergency Winter Weather Plan remains in effect through Monday, Dec. 15. The plan includes expanded shelter services and free transportation to shelters. Residents who see someone who may need shelter should call the Lexington Police Department non-emergency number at (859) 258-3600.
Given the icy conditions, it’s not just driving that can be risky. Slip and fall injuries can be serious. Wear appropriate shoes or boots and remember to walk like a penguin. Slightly bend your knees and shift your weight forward, centered over your front foot. Take short, shuffling steps. Your feet should stay flat. Keep your hands out of your pockets and extend your arms out to the side for balance.
The cold is also hard on our four-legged friends. Bring pets inside. Protect their paws from salt.
You also should be taking precautions to protect your home. Let water drip from faucets. Open under-sink cabinets to allow warm air to reach pipes. If your pipes freeze, turn off the water at the main.
