(KRON) – The San Francisco 49ers took another step towards severing ties with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. According to The Athletic, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list on Saturday, ending the receiver's 2025 season and likely his tenure on the team. The designation is "u sually applied to players who plan to retire or who have quit their team," The Athletic's Matt Barrows wrote. Head Coach Kyle Shanahan held out hope at midseason that Aiyuk could help the 49ers late in the year, but with only three weeks of practice left in the regular season, time has run out to get him ready for an NFL game, according to The Athletic's report. The 49ers voided the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract for 2026, alleging that his absences qualify as a failure to fulfill his contract.
