(KRON) – The San Francisco 49ers took another step towards severing ties with star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.
According to The Athletic, the 49ers placed Aiyuk on the reserve/left squad list on Saturday, ending the receiver's 2025 season and likely his tenure on the team. The designation is "u
sually applied to players who plan to retire or who have quit their team," The Athletic's Matt Barrows wrote.

The 49ers placed Aiyuk placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list in July while recovering from a season-ending ACL and MCL tear he sustained last season.
Head Coach Kyle Shanahan held out hope at midseason that Aiyuk could help the 49ers late in the year, but with only three weeks of practice left in the regular season, time has run out to get him ready for an NFL game, according to The Athletic's report.

Last month, the 49ers were reportedly “increasingly frustrated” with Aiyuk’s lack of communication and participation in team activities during his recovery. The 49ers voided the guaranteed money in Aiyuk’s contract for 2026, alleging that his absences qualify as a failure to fulfill his contract.
The 49ers drafted Aiyuk with the No. 25 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. The team signed Aiyuk to a four-year, $120 million contract extension last August after he had a breakout season in 2023.
