No. 19 Colorado College ties Miami 44; RedHawks win shootout
Dec 12, 2025
Colorado College was hours away from Cedar Point, but the Tigers still rode a roller coaster in Ohio on Friday.
They battled to a 4-4 tie with Miami of Ohio, but not before CC scored twice in 59 seconds in the third period to take a 4-3 lead only to see the RedHawks score an extra attacker goal t
o tie the game with 10 seconds left in the frame.
Miami seemingly scored a game-winner in overtime, but the goal was overturned for goalie interference after a minutes-long review. Ultimately, the RedHawks prevailed 1-0 in the shootout that followed, earning a crucial extra point toward National Collegiate Hockey Conference standings over No. 19 CC.
Tigers freshman left wing Wilson Björck netted two scores on Friday, including the team’s fourth goal at 15:29 of the third frame. The Swedish skater picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired it in for his fifth goal of the season.
Less than a minute earlier, Tigers freshman right wing Brayden Schuurman knotted the game at three goals apiece, putting back a rebound of his own, shot at 14:30.
CC (8-7-2, 2-5-2) fell behind in part because the team took too many penalties. After Miami forward Maximilian Helgeson scored in the first period to give the RedHawks a 1-0 lead, a pair of CC penalties in the second period led to a second goal for the hosts in the middle frame. RedHawks forward David Deputy scored at 16:50 of the second period, right as a Tigers holding penalty expired. CC took six penalties on the evening.
“I thought we took too many penalties and gave them some life,” CC coach Kris Mayotte told team personnel after the game. “I thought every time we got a little bit of momentum, we got a little bit of extended O-zone time, it would come back in our zone and we would take a penalty. We have to do a better job on the battles. We have to do a better job winning those wall battles and maintaining possession.”
Björck came up big for the Tigers, scoring with 21 seconds remaining in the second period to cut the RedHawks’ advantage in half. CC junior forward Riley Stuart tied the game early in the third period with a score at the 2:19 mark.
But the RedHawks, answered later in the frame after CC took back-to-back penalties. Deputy scored his second of the evening on a power-plat at 6:24 of the third period.
“I loved our third (period). We go into the third, down one on the road. They get a lead, they get a two-goal lead there in the second. We get a power-play goal to end the second to give us a little bit of juice going into the third,” Mayotte said. “We scored three third-period goals, and we find a way to claw back and give ourselves a lead.”
Tigers senior goaltender Kaidan Mbereko made 27 saves on Friday as Miami outshot CC 31-23.
The teams will conclude the series on Saturday at 4 p.m.
