HAYWARD, Calif. (KRON) -- A major explosion and fire at a Hayward home has left residents concerned for their safety as investigations continue into the cause of the incident. The explosion occurred on Lewelling Boulevard, affecting three homes and injuring six people. PGE crews and the National Tr ansportation Safety Board (NTSB) are on the scene, examining potential human factors and the pipeline system. "We were just surprised that 3 miles away, we heard it, it was a weird feeling," said a local resident. Atmospheric river could deliver warm, wet Christmas to the Bay Area "On top of us losing part of our properties that we're using, we're losing our peace of mind as well," said Roberto Vidal, a neighbor. Paola Vallejo, who lives next door, expressed her concerns, saying, "I was notified that there are chemicals. They told me that. So I called (their school) and they said, hey, chemicals." The affected homes have been fenced off to allow PGE to work on the site, and traffic in the area is closed off for the foreseeable future. Residents have expressed frustration and worry about the lack of communication and the impact on their daily lives, especially with the holidays approaching. Paola Vallejo, a mother of three, is particularly concerned about the health risks posed by chemicals, keeping her children indoors as much as possible.
