A few Colorado Springs organizations closed LGBTQ+ centers after reporting to Colorado Springs police what they called a “targeted security threat” against the LGBTQ+ community in the city. Inside Out Youth Services for LGBTQ+ teens and young adults closed Wednesday night and Thursday, the or ganization announced in an online post. It reopened Friday. Prism Community Collective, which formed to assist survivors of the Club Q fatal shooting on Nov. 19, 2022, also is closed and will not reopen until next Wednesday, said spokeswoman Amber Carlton. The Colorado Springs Police Department is aware of the situation and has not determined a credible threat, said spokesman Ira Cronin. “We are investigating the perceived, and what they’re citing as their concerns,” he said. “We’re aware of the individual and are investigating, but there’s nothing credible we’re working on.” The reports involve an individual who “has been harassing certain people,” Cronin said. Flyers with anti-LGBTQ+ messaging also were found. “We have a couple of cases, but nothing has risen to a high level where we can arrest anybody or cite them,” Cronin said. “We never take these concerns lightly and always follow-up. We’re seeing no specific targeted credible threat to our LGBTQ community.” Closing the organization’s sites was not a recommendation from police, he said. “If the organizations felt they needed to do to feel safe, that’s what they should do.” Prism was not directly targeted by the individual, said Carlton, who works for ChangeLine, which oversees the center. “But he has been harassing other downtown businesses, which is how we learned about the alleged threats that were made,” she said. “We closed out of an abundance of caution, while we get more clarity.” Unless there are new developments, Prism will return to business as usual on Dec. 17, following its usual Monday closure and a professional development meeting for staff on Tuesday, Carlton said. Inside Out reopened Friday, posting online, “While this situation is troubling, it is becoming clear that we will likely need to respond to similar incidents as they arise. We will continue to take each situation seriously and adjust as needed. We also want to emphasize that we have full time security at our community center.” Anyone who has information about the incidents can call the non-emergency police line, 719-444-7000, and speak to authorities. ...read more read less
