Philly schools to possibly pass ownership of vacant district buildings to city

The School Board of Philadelphia is looking to save some money by possibly transferring empty buildings to the city.
The board passed a resolution on Thursday, Dec. 11 that will allow them to consider passing ownership of vacant and surplus school buildings to the city of Philadelphia.

ding to the school board, these unused buildings use its financial resources that could be used at the district’s 300 in-use buildings.
“By responsibly evaluating how to put these unused properties back into productive use, the District can stay focused on educating children while supporting broader City efforts that ultimately aim to strengthen neighborhoods,” Philadelphia School District Superintendent Dr. Tony Watlington wrote in a statement.
The mayor’s office has reportedly expressed interest in repurposing the properties.
When any final agreement is met between the district and the city regarding the vacant buildings, the board will review it and vote to decide.
“Tonight’s Board action establishes a process for the important step of transferring long-abandoned school buildings to the City of Philadelphia, saving the District money that can be better spent in the classroom,” Chief Deputy Mayor Vanessa Garrett Harley wrote in a statement to NBC10.
