Man arrested after killing pedestrian during police chase FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WISH) — A man has been arrested after fatally striking a pedestrian during a vehicle chase with the Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD). At 6:02 a.m. Thursday, a Fort Wayne officer attempted to stop a vehicle near t he intersection of Lawton place and Griswold Drive. The vehicle failed to stop and instead began fleeing from officers. The fleeing vehicle circled the general area until 6:08 a.m., when the vehicle, which was now traveling eastbound on East Fourth Street, went to make a northbound turn onto Spy Run Avenue and struck a pedestrian in the roadway at that intersection. The vehicle continued fleeing and circling the area until it came to a stop in the 1400 block of Spy Run Avenue, at which time the driver and sole occupant (a man) parked the vehicle and began running on foot, during which he was seen throwing a handgun into the grass. With the assistance of several witnesses who called 911, the fleeing driver was eventually found hiding in the backyard of a home in the 1400 block of Spy Run Avenue. The handgun that the driver threw into the grass was recovered. The pedestrian who was struck (a man) was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle that was sideswiped (a woman) was not injured. The fleeing suspect was not injured. Spy Run Avenue between East Superior Street and East Fourth Street was closed during the investigation. The identity of the pedestrian who was fatally struck will be released by the Allen County Coroner’s Office at a later date. Denzel Trevon Gordon, 30, has been arrested and preliminarily charged with resisting a law enforcement officer with a vehicle – causing death, leaving the scene of an accident – causing death, reckless homicide, unlicensed driver – causing death, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, criminal recklessness – deadly weapon, resisting a law enforcement officer – on foot, and leaving the scene of an accident – occupied vehicle. ...read more read less
