It’s easy to see why this alleyway Levantine bar-bistro filled with dark, lush booths, fringe-lined lamps, and dramatically large dripping candles has been incredibly difficult to get a reservation at since it opened in late 2024. It quickly joined the New York Times 50 best restaurants l ist and was even added to the Michelin Guide within its first year of opening. Despite selling itself as a moody, late night wine and cocktail bar with inviting jewel-toned ambiance, legendary Albi chef Michael Rafidi’s food menu is what make La’ Shukran worth the hype. Loyal bargoers return for the untraditional hummus and labne dishes topped with barbecued mushrooms or crab and a simple Lebanese rice dish loaded with lamb. What to order The smoky escargots and arak butter on hummus is a must order. The earthy flavors of sesame-laden hummus and briny snails are brightened by the lightly herbal butter, all soaked up with grilled bread from the wood-fired oven in Yellow downstairs. Don’t be afraid to double up on hummus dishes, they all have distinct toppings and the chickpea spread is especially good here. The transformed falafel jibne is exploding with fresh herbs, borrowed from traditional Palestinian preparations, and the fluffy texture is upgraded with tiny pieces of mild cheese and a salty trout roe topping.  The soujek dumplings are not always on the menu, but you should always ask if they are still quietly serving the tiny manti-style pouches. The rich beef and lamb shoulder filling paired with urfa chili crunch and cooling garlic yogurt is truly addictive. The mushroom version also hits the spot. What to drink Try the arak service at least once, it’s a rarity in D.C. and the waiters can walk you through the story behind whichever bottle you choose. The strong licorice flavor has rich herbal undertones that open up and soften as you add water. Order a glass (or bottle) of natural-leaning wine, picked out by Michelin-awarded sommelier William Simons. The thoughtful selection pairs wonderfully with the Levantine spice and herb-filled savory dishes.
