HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Hanover County has begun accepting nominations for the 2026 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards, which annually recognizes individuals and groups who have made a significant difference in the community. On Thursday, Dec. 11, county officials announced that nominations had op ened for the 2026 Spirit of Volunteerism Awards. Next year's awards reportedly feature 11 new categories that highlight a large range of volunteer contributions across all ages and service areas. The following are the individual categories, according to a county spokesperson: Spirit of Promise: Youth 18 or younger or still in high school Spirit of Momentum: Adults ages 19-30 Spirit of Purpose: Adults ages 31-59 Spirit of Wisdom: Seniors 60 and older Spirit of Commitment: Adults who have demonstrated a long-term dedication to volunteerism The group categories are as follows: Spirit of Unity: Independent group, such as a family or group of friends, who serve an organization or community project Spirit of Community: Nonprofit organization that strengthens, supports and serves the community Spirit of Grace: Faith-based or spiritual communities that volunteer together Spirit of Initiative: Groups of student volunteers who spur meaningful change Spirit of Support: Organizations that champion students, educators and school communities Spirit of Partnership: Businesses that lead with heart and invest in their communities Individuals and groups can submit their own nominations or be nominated by someone else. Nominees should know of their nomination, and nominators are urged to collaborate with them on the nomination form. Nominations will be accepted until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026.
