Martinsville to consolidate 4 elementary schools by end of 202627 school year

MARTINSVILLE, Ind. (WISH) — The Metropolitan School District of Martinsville Board of Trustees is set to approve plans to consolidate four elementary schools by the end of the 2026–2027 school year,
The trustees announced the move in a release Wednesday evening, saying the consolidation
will pave the way for a new school to open in 2027.
The consolidation involves Centerton Elementary, Green Township Elementary, Poston Road Elementary, and Smith Fine Arts Academy, which will close as the district transitions to a new, modern facility.
According to the district’s website, the elementary schools serve approximately 900 students in the Martinsville area.
The board says the new school aims to provide updated learning spaces, improved safety, and expanded opportunities for students; many of the schools are outdated, all being built before the 1960s, and no longer meet the needs of a modern learning environment, they say.
Heather Staggs, president of the MSD of Martinsville School Board, said in the release the project reflects its long-term commitment to make sure “education thrives” in the district.
“As a Board, it is our responsibility to plan not just for today’s students, but for generations to come,” she added.
Martinsville Superintendent Eric Bowlen echoed Staggs’ sentiment, sharing that the step to consolidate “reflects the district’s responsibility to build on that history and create the best possible environment for students today and in the future.”
Jill Vlcan and Stephanie Manley have been appointed as principal and assistant principal, respectively. Both women have doctorates in education, and currently serve as principals at two of the schools that will be consolidated.
The construction of the new school is part of a tax-neutral project using a “Build-Operate-Transfer” model. There will be tax increase for Martinsville residents, the school says.
The district is working on redistricting plans to determine new school assignments. Preliminary assignments expected by early 2026.
Teachers and staff will be able to share their placement preferences through a survey as part of the transition process. Families will receive detailed information once available.
The board did not indicate where the new school would be built. The facility’s name will be announced at a later date.
